Daze of Future Past

“The Impressionist and Pictorialist genres of art were concurrently fashionable at the end of the 19th century.  Depicting the landscape was a perfect subject for pictorialist photography, enabling photographers to differentiate themselves from their painter brothers.

In this body of work, Vanessa Laverty has striven to reduce the impressionist feeling to as basic a colour palette as possible, whilst allowing an abstract version of pictorialism to be illustrated.  Reference to some of the last works of Claude Monet (Sea-Roses (Yellow Nirwana), 1920; and Water-Lily Pond, c1915–1926) give the viewer some reference points to find a similarity to these genres of art”.

Ian Poole  Brisbane, 2013

Through this body of work, I have endeavoured to discover the qualities within myself, which I felt had been repressed over the decades in order to accommodate family and the responsibilities that having my own family brings.
The images in this series began life as a challenge to myself to abandon the inherent rigid disciplines that I had imposed upon myself throughout my life. Referencing Pictorialism and Impressionism and by utilising various techniques to evoke a sense of the passage of time and romanticism and to also show a spiritual quality, a passion for abstract photography has been awakened.
